  1. A Russian-led bloc of post-Soviet nations has agreed to establish a rapid-reaction military force to combat terrorists and respond to regional emergencies, Russian media reported Wednesday.

The decision came a day after reports that Kyrgyzstan is planning to close a strategically important U.S. military base that Washington uses to transport troops and supplies into Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, the Collective Security Treaty Organization — made up of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan — decided on the rapid-reaction force at a Kremlin summit, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported.

Now, we’ve poured a gazillion dollars into fighting two wars in Southwest Asia, the result of which is our military has forgotten how to fight the AirLand Battle against a large mechanized force.

The excuse that Rumsfeld and the rest of his lapdogs gave was “this is the new face of warfare.” No need to worry about Russians or North Korea – we’ll never face another large military force again!

The invasion of Georgia should’ve been a wakeup call for the DoD. We had no mechanized force that we could threaten to deploy because all of our tanks and APCs are in the desert of Iraq falling apart.

It wouldn’t matter anyway – all of our troops are trained to fight in low-intensity conflicts, and haven’t been trained in Battalion or Brigade operations since before 9/11.

Now Russian has built Warsaw Pact 2.0, and we’re even more screwed that we were in the 1970’s.

    1. .

After paying him hundreds of millions in bribes, at least the CIA can count on one of the 5 central Asian republics to stand with us.

President for life Saparmurat Niyazov (Turkmenbashy) is a true friend of America, in the mold of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Pervez Musharraf.

      Oops.

      now what ?

      .

  2. Will Interior Secretary Ken Salazar be Barack Obama’s first nominee to the Supreme Court?  With as many as three vacancies looming Salazar’s name should be in the mix.

Will Tom Strickland move up to be Secretary of Interior?

    1. When all the speculation regarding one of the Salazars going to the cabinet was going on in December, I noted on this board that I thought that one of the possibilites for Ken Salazar would be an appointment to the court.

It is not something that is driving Ken, but I think he would consider it now (since he is no longer in the Senate) since it would make him the first Hispanic on the court.

Interesting dilemna for liberal supporters of Obama.  Ken is undoubtedly not as liberal as many of them would like to see on the court.  I am sure they want some real balance to the rightward list of court presently.  This would be particularly so, if Ken was nominated to replace someone like Stevens or Ginsberg, two of the more liberal justices.

      1. but he is far from the right wing of the court and would absolutely sail through confirmation.  He’d be a fine, as well as historic, choice as long as he can calm pro-choice fears as to his intentions on Roe V Wade.

    2. If not, certainly spookily (???) appropriate.

Yes, K. Salazar would be a great SC justice.  I’d like him to be further left, but I’ll take him.

      1. Yes PR it was due to the tragic illness of Justice Ginsberg.  Ginsberg is a far more liberal Justice than Breyer the other Clinton nominee.  Obama with the majority he has in the Senate can name anyone with a pulse and a law degree.  Why not name a true liberal to take the place of the last of a breed?  You never know how a Justice will turn out.  John Paul Stevens became almost a liberal while Byron White was conservative by even Rehnquist Court standards.

        1. then I don’t see how Obama can fail to appoint a woman, leaving the Court without even one. Didn’t know that prior to commenting on Salazar.  Plenty of old Supremes. Not only would the Court be without a woman but no woman and a man perhaps not seen as reliable on Roe V Wade? The search might be on for a Hispanic woman altogether.

          1. I’m sure Salazar would make a fine jurist, but there are plenty of other folks who would be equally qualified and keep at least one woman on the Court.  I’d be particularly surprised of Obama’s first appointee, replacing Ginsburg or anyone else, wasn’t female.

  3. BO BO?

GREAT WESTERN OIL AND GAS: Former Colorado Gov. Bill Owens and veteran oil- industry executive Neal Stanley have joined the board of the Denver-based affiliate of the Broe Group.

    1. it will be hilarious to watch the wailing and gnashing of teeth over at Kos.  🙂

This is a stupid issue.  Let repubs grandstand for a few more days about “personal responsibility” and delay the vote for a while.  It was 16 freakin’ years ago and frankly not much money.

The last thing I want is a Labor Sec who “Big Business” wouldn’t flip out about.  Perlmutter would be palatable, but Solis makes a statement.
